Age Meme: Laraniel by Isriana Age Meme: Laraniel by Isriana
Well, this was sort of challenging. I've never made an age meme before and it proved to be quite interesting - it's still not perfect but I think I managed to maintain some likeness throughout different ages. Also, to add some challenge I chose my Altmer mage Laraniel as a test subject. I've said this before and I'll probably say it again, but damn I'm so lost with that high elf color palette... :XD: I hope that one day I'll have time to make something like this about my other Skyrim characters, too.
Now, as far the meme itself is concerned, the elven aging is a bit tricky (hence the lack of actual ages) but I was aiming at depicting her as what would be a human equivalent of about 1, 4, 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25 years old. The last one takes place during the events of Skyrim so that would make her 240 years old, but as far the others go I have no idea what the actual numbers might be - so if anyone of you have come across a lore article or forum discussion that would shed light on subject, feel free to let me know. :D

Out of curiosity where was she during the Great War between the Empire and the Dominion? Hope she steered clear of the bulk of that conflict.

She spent most of that time in the province High Rock which (much like Skyrim) managed to stay relatively peaceful and far from front lines. As a lone, blind elven woman who kept to herself and seemed mostly interested in regaining her strength and basic magic skills, Laraniel was mostly left in peace by the locals. She isn't that fond of Thalmor agenda and she has never fought in their ranks. Laraniel has enough issues of her own as it is - no need to get tangled with some pointless crusade.

If only all of us could be so fortunate. Most of my OCs lost family in the conflict but my characters are all Nords and Imperials. Is she still blind or did her sight come back to her?

My characters (excluding Laraniel) are quite young so luckily they didn't have to witness the actual war. Bron was born a year before the Great War ended, but growing up in sacked Bravil he sure saw plenty of the aftermath of it all. Skaila is the luckiest of the three in that regard, as she was born three years after the peace treaty in Winterhold which is about as far from the front lines as one could possibly get.
Laraniel is still blind, and has been for almost a century. It has taken her a great deal of time to learn how to use her arcane skills as substitute for the sight she lost.

That'd be around the time when that magic experiment went wrong and cost her her sight.

In the second-to-last panel, why does Laraniel almost remind me of the Shaman from Darksiders II?

i think they age normally until 18 then from 18 to 200 or 300 they are considered young, 301 to 600 is like middle age, then 700 to 1000 us elderly or old. if i read right from some sites XD. I think Neloth is either in is 800's or 900's.

the way I base my high elf age thingy is that calcelmo in markarth has been studying the dwemer for 200 years by his account and considering everything he says and his friends and family says he likely started studying them very early on. This is very innacurate as you can base the ageing process on the fact that hes very old and atleast 200 years old but you then have to guess a bit about the age he would have started studying them. I don't know he might say when he started in one of hid 'dwarves' books but I age him at being around 250 and being close to if not in the last few years of his natural life.

If she was 240 years old, wouldn't that mean she grew up during the Oblivion Crisis?

Yes, during the events of Oblivion and Morrowind both. :D

Well then. When you get to a place called Blackreach, there is a small building just in front of alftand with a familiar name(from Oblivion)in it.

High Elves (Altmer) up to 300 and even then at that age they are REALLY old for an Altmer.

If she looked like she were 25 at the age of 240, then she would begin to age rapidly, rather than just a normal age progression to a slowed aging.

Yeah... I think I've found a somewhat believable loophole for that. :D It might or might not be lore friendly enough to some, but what the heck - in the end, it's my story.

Well, I'm thinking that because my Dunmer shares the blood (and is a direct descendant) of Kohnarik, her lifespan is much longer than that of the average Dunmer, almost reaching that of the average Altmer.

It was either in a book I read in the game or a lore series on youtube.... I don't really remember.... I also have seen in wikipedias and such that Altmer live to be 1000, but I think 300 is more believeable (it's just my opinion).

Yeah, I've been scouring websites and discussion boards trying to find a credible enough source about elven aging - so far I've only been able to determine that their lifespan is most likely something between 200-1000 years. I'm kind of wishing Bethesda made some statement about it... :P

They can live over 1000 years. I don't know if that's the biological lifespan or the average, and because they deem intelligence highly valuable, I'd assume many of them use magic to live longer, which would mean their average age is most likely higher than their biological lifespan. In either case, it's highly likely that she is 240 and looks like a human would at 25.
Oh, and what's the bandage covering her eyes in the second to last panel?

I think the standard life span of an elf is 1000 years. Orcs are expected to live only to 60 due to culture, once they get too old they deem themselves unworthy of being chief. Though some Orcs likely live longer (true life-spans, not culture. Such as my own orc who is over 3 centuries old.)

Altmer, depending on life-style and magickal expertise can live for longer than 1k years, so long as they're careful.

Well one of the Barenziah books in-game did mention the "thousand year lifespans" of elves. There was a developer character interview that had a dark elf peasant say he expected to live well into his second century but that better living conditions/higher birth and magick increased the life expectancy

Barenziah herself was over 400 years old in Morrowind, no word of what happened to her in Skyrim.

And then there's Divayth Fyr, another Dunmer and the oldest NPC we've met in the games at over 4000 years old as of Morrowind and he was in good shape both mentally and physically. Such a badass.

Yeah, Dunmer are my main field of expertise.

Love your work, hope I was of some help :)

Snow Elf Knight-Paladin Gelebor is pretty old too, maybe even older than Divayth Fyr, because Gelebor lived since Firs Era and that makes him about 4450 years old in Skyrim, if I'm correct ^^

I like the idea of a blind mage using spells to 'see', reminds me of Toph from th original Avatar the Last Airbender, none the less i find things like this both highly mysterious and original. One of my favorite artists on DA.
